A celebration of life asks for food that looks after people quietly. This page sets out how OH! plans a reception after a service in Ottawa — the format, the halls and homes it happens in, how short notice is handled, and what it costs — so a family can see all of it in one place without making a second phone call to find out.

The OH! approach

A warm table,
and one fewer thing to arrange.

Funeral reception and celebration-of-life catering on short notice

Most of these dates arrive with little warning, so the useful thing is a fast yes or no. Call +1 613 710-0554 with the date, the hall or the address and a rough number, and you get a straight answer the same day about what is possible, including the dates we cannot take. A written message gets its answer within one business day, with what it would take to hold the date.

The format that works

A self-serve share table that people return to across a long, loose window. There is no service moment to miss, no seating plan to build, and no announcement that food is ready. Guests arrive over an hour or two straight from a service, and the table is still legible and generous for whoever comes last. Everything is sized to be eaten standing or from a lap. It is the same grazing table we build for a celebration, styled down and quietened, and our grazing tables page describes how one is composed.

What goes on it

Familiar and generous. Sandwiches cut small, savoury bites and tartlets, a warm item where the space allows one, cheese and fruit, one leaf or grain salad for something fresh, and small sweets to close alongside whatever the family has brought. The styling stays restrained: quiet colour, low height, nothing that reads as a celebration table dressed for a party.

Community halls, legion rooms and church halls

The hall sets the shape of the day more than the menu does. Most rent in fixed blocks, which fixes the setup window and the pack-down time and leaves no room to run late. Many have their own rules about what a supplier may bring in and which parts of their kitchen may be used, and several ask for paperwork. We confirm all of it with the hall before quoting, so the schedule the family is given is the real one.

Tea, coffee and what the hall already has

Most halls have an urn and a volunteer who knows how it works, and that arrangement is usually better left alone. We plan around it and say plainly what we are bringing and what we are counting on the hall for. Where a family is hosting at home instead, hot drinks for thirty people need a plan beyond a kettle, and we will tell you that early enough to rent one.

Receptions at the house

Where people gather at home after the service, the kitchen should not become somebody’s job. We build on the surface you have, keep the route to it clear, leave the space ready before anyone arrives, and take everything away afterwards. Nobody in the family is asked to find containers, wash a platter or return anything.

Numbers you cannot know yet

Guest counts for these events are genuinely uncertain until the day, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. We plan to a number you are comfortable with and build in headroom at the top. The count is final 7 days before the reception; after that it can still rise, though it can no longer fall. Where the date falls inside that window, the count is agreed when you book and the quote says so in writing.

The practicalities you should not have to raise

Leftovers are boxed before we leave, so the food goes home with the family. Serving pieces are collected the next morning, because nobody should be handing over trays at the end of that day. The bill goes to whoever is handling it, with the figure agreed in advance and no additions afterwards.

What it costs

The quote uses the published figures and nothing else: $42 per guest for the food and the build at the starting price, $45 for delivery and on-site styling within 25 km, and a $600 event minimum, plus applicable taxes. It is written for the number the family is comfortable with, and guests added before the final count are priced at the same rate.

Dietary needs and labelling

Every item is labelled with a plain-language name first, which matters here because guests will take what is nearest and ask nobody. If the family knows of an allergy among the guests, mention it when you call, and the table is planned with it in mind before anything is cooked.

If the hall asks for paperwork

Some halls ask every supplier for a certificate of insurance. OH! works from a kitchen it rents and holds no liability policy of its own today, so we ask the hall about its rules before quoting, and the family hears the answer from us first.

Where these receptions are held in Ottawa

Families here use four kinds of space, and the choice shapes the day more than the menu does. A community hall or a legion room, rented in a fixed block, which fixes the setup and the pack-down to the same hours and usually comes with its own rules about what a supplier may bring in. A church hall attached to the service, often with an urn and volunteers already in place. A restaurant’s private room, where the first question is whether the room takes food from outside at all. Or the family home, where the kitchen should stay out of it. Tell us which of the four you are looking at, or that the decision is still open, and the answer covers what each one would mean for the afternoon. We deliver and build anywhere inside the 25 km radius; for the west end, our Kanata catering page sets out the drive, the timing and what a hall out there asks for.

Hot food at a funeral reception

Some families want a hot dish on the table after the service. Hot dishes are quoted per event beside the table, and they follow the same clock as the rest of the reception: about two hours at room temperature, then into the fridge. Our hot buffet page lists the hot dishes OH! has cooked and sold so far, and any other dish the family names gets a straight answer the same day.

A small gathering of close family

A reception for ten or fifteen of the closest family is taken too, at the $600 event minimum before delivery and taxes. The price per guest rises as the group shrinks, and the quote says so before anything is agreed.

Questions, answered

Before you
say OH!

How quickly can you cater a celebration of life in Ottawa?

We answer every enquiry within one business day, and for a celebration of life a call gets a straight answer the same day about the date, including the dates we cannot take. A date inside two weeks is always worth asking about, weekdays especially.

How much does catering for a celebration of life for 50 people cost in Ottawa?

From $2,100 for fifty guests — $42 per guest for the food and the styled build — and $2,145 once the $45 delivery and on-site styling within 25 km is added, plus applicable taxes. The table is built quietly on the surface the hall or the house has, every item is labelled, leftovers are boxed for the family before we leave, and the bill goes to whoever is handling it with the figure agreed in advance.

Can you work with a community hall or legion room?

Yes, and the hall sets the shape of the day. Most rent in fixed blocks, which fixes the setup and pack-down times, and many have their own rules about what a supplier may bring in. We confirm both with the hall before quoting.

Can you bring hot food to a funeral reception in Ottawa?

Yes: hot dishes are quoted per event beside the table, under the same $600 event minimum, and they come down after about two hours at room temperature like everything else on it. Call +1 613 710-0554 with the date and the number, and the answer about what we can cook comes the same day.

How do you handle allergies and dietary requirements?

Share dietary preferences and allergy information when you enquire. We plan suitable choices and label the table clearly. For severe or life-threatening allergies we talk through cross-contact before you book, and we cannot guarantee allergen-free preparation on a shared table.
