A backyard party for 30 comes to $1,305 at the starting price with delivery and the build in your garden, plus applicable taxes, with the shade and rain plan written into the same quote. How it is priced

Outdoor events in Ottawa run from late May to mid-September, and everything the sun, the wind and the insects do to a styled table has to be planned before the van is loaded. This page covers what changes when the table leaves the building — backyard birthdays, garden parties, showers held outside and summer celebrations — including the temperature thresholds, the rain fallback and the placement decisions that get made two weeks out.

The Ottawa outdoor window

Late May to mid-September is the reliable stretch. Inside it, the day’s temperature does more to the plan than the menu does. In the shade, dairy and cured meat hold for about two hours; past about 32 °C that drops to about one hour. Cold bases carry the higher-risk items, and the second wave comes out later than it would indoors. Early June and the first half of September give the easiest afternoons, with warm light and temperatures that leave soft cheese alone.

What holds outside, and what stays in

Firm cheeses, cured meats, marinated and roasted vegetables, olives, crackers held under cover, whole fruit, tarts with a baked filling and dry-baked sweets all work through a warm afternoon. Soft ripened cheese slumps in direct sun within twenty minutes. Anything bound with mayonnaise or cream stays inside or comes out on a cold base for a short window. Chocolate softens above about 24 °C, so a July dessert run leans on fruit, tarts and cookies.

Shade, cold-hold and placement

Where the table stands gets decided before the date and confirmed on the plan, because finding shade on the morning of a party is how a display ends up next to the recycling.

  • Shade or covered placement chosen in advance, allowing for how the sun moves
  • Cold bases under the higher-risk items on warm afternoons
  • A display window that halves once the space is warmer than about 32 °C
  • Distance from the kitchen door planned into the layout so the route stays clear
  • Covers for the moment the table is unattended, agreed with the host

The rain plan

A fallback is agreed at quote stage: a named indoor surface, its length and depth, and the same layout rebuilt inside. Ottawa summer rain is usually a fast cell that clears inside an hour, so the decision point is often a call at midday. Settling it two weeks out means the day of the party has one fewer decision in it and the build starts on time either way.

Wind, grass and levelling

Wind is the constraint nobody plans for and the one that ruins photographs. Serving pieces are chosen with weight, light items are weighted or left off, and cards are anchored. On grass or a sloped deck the table gets levelled before anything goes on it, because a two-degree lean shows in every picture and sends anything round to one end. Drinks live on a separate surface so the food is never being reached across.

Wasps, and the last three weeks of summer

From roughly mid-August, wasps make sweet items and open drinks a genuine planning question in an Ottawa garden. The practical answers are keeping the sweet run covered until it is wanted, siting the bin well away from the table, putting drinks under lids, and building the display away from anything in flower. Late-August bookings get planned around this without anyone needing to raise it.

Garden parties and summer celebrations

Showers, birthdays, anniversaries and graduations all move outside through the summer, and the format flexes between brunch, celebration and reception depending on the hour. Field produce, berries and stone fruit, bakery, firm cheeses, savoury bites and small sweets carry a summer table without weighing down an afternoon in the heat. A garden table is a grazing table with the fragile half of the menu taken out of it, and our grazing tables page carries the format in full.

Traffic and the grill

Guest traffic is routed away from grills and from the service path, so the queue never crosses the route a hot pan is taking. It sounds small, and it is the difference between a relaxed garden and a bottleneck at the patio door with somebody carrying tongs through it.

Where this books most

Suburban yards carry most of the summer bookings — Kanata, Barrhaven and Orléans especially, where the gardens are deep and the kitchens open straight onto them. Every area we deliver into, and what happens to the charge past the radius, is set out on our locations page.

Costs and terms

An outdoor build is quoted on the same published figures as an indoor one, with the shade plan, the cold-hold and the rain fallback written into the quote rather than bolted onto it afterwards. The per-guest price, the event minimum, the delivery charge and the deposit and cancellation terms are all on our pricing page, so the whole number is visible before a summer date is held.

Labelling an outdoor table

Cards outdoors have to survive wind and stay readable in bright sun, so they are anchored and printed large, with the item’s name first and its dietary markers underneath. Send the allergies with the final count, and anything serious is talked through before the date, the same as indoors.

Questions, answered

Before you
say OH!

How long can a grazing table stay out in the heat at a backyard party?

About two hours in the shade on a mild day for anything with dairy or cured meat, and about one hour once the garden is warmer than about 32 °C. Outdoors we plan shade in advance, cold bases under the higher-risk items, and a second wave held in the fridge, and the whole plan is written into the quote before the date.

How much does backyard party catering for 30 guests cost in Ottawa?

$1,260 at the starting price of $42 per guest, plus $45 for delivery and on-site styling within 25 km: $1,305 for thirty backyard guests, plus applicable taxes. An outdoor build is quoted on the same figures as an indoor one, with the shade plan, the cold-hold and the rain fallback written in; our pricing page carries the totals at 12, 20, 30 and 50.

When does the outdoor season run in Ottawa?

Late May to mid-September is the reliable window for an outdoor styled table, and early June and the first half of September give the easiest afternoons. Either side of it we plan an indoor build with the garden as the room the party spills into.

How do you handle allergies and dietary requirements?

Share dietary preferences and allergy information when you enquire. We plan suitable choices and label the table clearly. For severe or life-threatening allergies we talk through cross-contact before you book, and we cannot guarantee allergen-free preparation on a shared table.
