A three o’clock birthday and an eight o’clock birthday are different jobs. The afternoon version replaces lunch for some guests and precedes dinner for others, so it needs breadth more than volume. The evening version usually replaces dinner outright, which means substance, warm items where the room allows, and something that still reads as food at eleven when the second wind arrives. Milestone birthdays carry a different room

A fortieth or a sixtieth usually means three generations, a speech, and someone taking photographs of the table before anyone is allowed to touch it. 300 to 400 g and ten to fourteen pieces per guest where the evening replaces dinner, so 12–16 kg and 400–560 pieces for forty over two hours; an afternoon party where guests eat elsewhere plans on 150 to 200 g and 240–360 pieces. Forty guests fit one 2.4 m surface, and a second wave is held back for the late surge around the cake.

How late can I book birthday catering in Ottawa?
